buying guide

Body

Most novice starter kits and packs include a Telecaster, Stratocaster, or Les Paul-style guitar. Explorer, SG, and V-shaped variants are also available. Poplar and basswood are the most preferred materials because they're both inexpensive and simple to deal with. The former is slightly brighter and similar to alder (Fender's favorite wood), while the latter is warmer. However, you may be able to obtain a variety of inexpensive tonewoods for the body, including Okoume and agathis, as well as alder.

Neck

The maple neck is standard on the majority of these guitars. It's inexpensive, reasonably simple to work with, and by far the most durable of all the traditional tonewoods. However, the curvature of the neck should be considered. The fingerboard would typically contain 21 or 22 frets. The scale length, or the distance between the string nut and the bridge, is another factor to consider. 25-1/2" and 24-3/4" are the two typical scale lengths. The 24-3/4" scale is better suited for beginners and adolescents who have smaller hands. Adults would be better served by the 25-1/2" scale. These are, of course, generic recommendations that may or may not apply to you. If you're having trouble with a 24-3/4" model, consider switching to a 24" or even a 23" scale.

Pickups

There are a variety of pickup setups available for these guitars. Two single-coils, three single-coils, two humbuckers, and a humbucker and two single-coils are the most popular.

Amplifier

In an electric guitar starting kit, the combination amplifier is the second most crucial piece of gear. You'll most likely find a one-speaker 10 to 15W amp in the budget category, which is small but not as feeble as a portable tiny amp. It should include separate equalizers for clean and distortion/drive channels (two or three knobs). The bass and treble knobs are required, while the midrange knob is optional. The clean channels will have their volume controls, and the distortion channel will have a gain/drive knob as well.

Other Accessories

You should also pay attention to the instrument and amplifier's accessories. The following are some examples. A basic shoulder strap should be included in every beginner kit. It's usually made of polyester, isn't cushioned, and isn't particularly comfortable. All beginning bundles include basic gig bags. To boost the value of a beginning pack, some manufacturers may include a lightly cushioned pouch.

It's never too late or too early to begin performing music, and an electric guitar starter kit is as convenient as anything available. When purchasing a starting kit for yourself or your child, ensure that the guitar and amp are of decent quality and play and sound well.

Happy playing!
