Not only is the music heard, but it's also felt. The rumble you hear from deep bass frequencies is produced by your car's subwoofers, not by the normal radio speakers. Subwoofers are speakers that reproduce low-frequency sounds, particularly bass and sub-bass. If you want your music to shake the windows and the ground, investing in a subwoofer is the way to go. Make sure you use the best gauge speaker wire for subwoofer before you start wiring your subwoofer for a DIY audio installation.

Buying guide

Thickness

Not only is the music heard, but it's also felt. The rumble you hear from deep bass frequencies is produced by your car's subwoofers, not by the normal radio speakers. Subwoofers are speakers that reproduce low-frequency sounds, particularly bass and sub-bass. If you want your music to shake the windows and the ground, investing in a subwoofer is the way to go. Make sure you use the best gauge speaker wire for the subwoofer before you start wiring your subwoofer for a DIY audio installation.

Before you start cutting a wire or even buying it, grab some string and physically layout your wire route in your vehicle. Using a tape measure to precisely measure it is difficult, but string provides a far better visual image, and you can then simply measure the string with your tape measure. Once everything is in place and your design is finished, snip off the excess length. You can use a 12-gauge speaker wire if your subsystem will deliver more than 1,000 watts RMS.

A 16-gauge speaker wire will, however, be enough in the vast majority of cases. According to the experts, order twice as much as you think you'll need. You never know when you'll need to move a sub or amplifier, so having the extra length will come in handy. Subwoofers should be wired using 12- to 16-gauge wire. There will be no audible difference between them because the larger cable will have less power loss.

Type

We recommend banana connections if you buy wire without connectors. It's a headache to connect bare wire ends to a home theater receiver. You'll need UL-rated CL2 or CL3 speaker wire if you wish to run speaker wire through your walls or ceiling.

You'll need wire rated for direct burial if you want to bury your outdoor speaker wire. For additional information, see our entire in-wall wiring guide.

A 4-conductor cable can be used to run a single line from your amplifier or receiver to the in-wall volume control in another room over a long distance. The volume control can then be connected to each of the stereo speakers in that place via 2-conductor wires. Connecting stereo-input speakers with a four-conductor cable is also a good option.

To discover the proper wiring for your project, consult a designer. Connect a 4-conductor connection to in-wall volume control (left) or a stereo-input speaker with a 4-conductor cable (right).

The success of the subwoofer is almost entirely due to bass. A large sub with a lot of power is the safest bet. It's significantly better to operate a large sub at "4" than a small sub at "10." While any subwoofer purchase can increase your sound quality, if you want to go all out, a local custom installer may be able to assist you with installation and placement. Pay special attention to the cable that connects your amplifier (or amps, if you have more than one) to your speakers and/or subwoofer.

Enjoy!
